Waiting for Dad
(Bourne 24/7/1996)
Waiting for Dad to wake up,
So we can go into town,
'Cos he's promised to buy me a pair of new shoes
And my Dad never lets me down.
Waiting for Dad to wake up,
To go out in the car for a run,
To a place with a stream and a picnic spot,
To a place of sunshine and fun.
Waiting for Dad to wake up,
To go back to the beach once again,
To play French cricket and dig in the sand
And enjoy an ice cream now and then!
Waiting for Dad to wake up,
So we can go out for a walk,
To discuss what we think and the things we shall do,
'Cos we always have subjects to talk.
Waiting for Dad to wake up,
Looking out at the trees and the sky.
Waiting for Dad to wake up.
Waiting for Dad to die!
Dad always used to like his snoozes, and didn't thank you for disturbing him. So I was used to waiting for him to 'come round' before we set off to do things. He died in Bourne hospital, and I'd sometimes sit there beside him "looking out at the trees and the sky" while he slept, wondering what it was all leading to. Dear Dad!
