Until I Have Captured Your Mind
(Lidice, 1975)
I tried writing poems about you,
But could never get verses to rhyme,
And the mood always sort of seemed awkward,
And I wasted a great deal of time.
I said that in spite of your kisses,
Your affection and tenderness too,
Despite all the warm smiles you gave me,
I loved you and always would do.
I said that I carried your photo,
And I do, and it's precious to me,
Yet I know that it's useless to look at,
For it's only your face that I see.
I wrote of the warmth of your body,
And the pleasure I know I could find.
But it isn't your body I'm wanting,
Not until I have captured your mind!
So although I have failed as a poet,
You can tell that I really have tried
To explain what it means just to love you,
And the feelings I feel deep inside.
I met my wife towards the end of 1975 and we were parted when I had to go and work at Lidice in Rio de Janeiro state for a time.
