For Ernie And Moira
Spokane 2/7/1971
And they're going to name a baby after me.
I thought they were joking when they told me,
But I didn't dare laugh when I saw they were serious,
And somewhere, very deep and wide inside me
I felt so humble.
I didn't know our friendship was like that.
I didn't know they thought of me when I wasn't there.
It was a lot to think about when they came right out and said
They were going to name a baby after me.
Why me? God! What a lousy start for a kid,
A snow-white kid with no mistakes ever made,
Just a whole life to live
And saddled with my name.
You don't get two chances in this life but you feel
That there's a little bit of you going through on a thread
To a kid not yet born to start you again
And you feed it the Love that you felt when they said
That they loved you and missed you and wanted you.
And they're going to name that baby after me!
I'd kept in touch with Ernie and Moira from the Samaritans in Aberdeen.
