Evolution Forever (Spokane, 2/11/1971)
When the sun turns to ashes And the core of the earth goes cold, When Orion always sees the same pole, The world will die.
In the twilight of the stars it will sit, Stoned forever, With the cold cultures settled upon its face And the oceans frozen rigidly in place.
Nothing endures for all time. But, when the last hint of warmth goes, Driven from the earth, frozen, to the skies, It won't be alone. With it The last cell of life dies.
For the succession of life Will march through time, A Golden Thread, woven With your destiny and mine.
So, breathe, my son, to your children, While heat runs in your body and life in your blood, And laugh at the stars For you will outlast some of them Through the brotherhood!
The idea that all living things trace their genetic ancestry back to the origins of life on earth was fascinating - and still is. If you kill a fly, you bring to an end, in an instant, a successful chain of evolution that goes back for about four thousand million years. Think about that! |
