Death Valley Junction
(21/4/1971)

When soul leaks out round the rims of your eyes
And sticks in your throat or your boots,
And a walk all alone with the wind in your face
Doesn't help it escape or reduce,

When blowing a mouth-organ strident and long,
Or just feeling lonely inside
Doesn't relieve the old feeling you feel
You're stuck for a while on the slide.

You know you must think of the things that take hold
And bug you and won't let you go.
Those friends and those places and that way of life
That you lived in yourself long ago.

So it's there, you don't know why,
It just got touched off
By something you read, saw, or heard.
And it’s part of your day, so just live it out,
For tomorrow Today's just a word.

I've checked, and to my surprise 21/4/1971 was a Wednesday, not a Sunday. As I mentioned, Sunday's are hardest for those away from home. By now I'd already spent time in Tennessee and driven to LA, then to work in Death Valley, where I stayed at the old Death Valley Junction hotel. I was clearly missing friends and family, but also I was learning to cope. I knew the feelings would pass.
