I’ve written Dave’s story
As best I can.
I took out the letters, the photos, the poems.
I dug deep into memories from down the years
And squeezed out emotions and recollections,
Moistened sometimes by tears.
The hurt for me is still there,
Though twenty years are gone,
But Dave left me verses, papers, happy thoughts,
And I have to pass them on.
I did it for me.
I did it for him.
I did it to tell his children,
who never knew him as I did
because Dave has gone.
He was taken before we were ready,
But lives still, while we recall.
And we do.
I did this for Emerson and Nadia,
And, Eric, I did it for you.
